Here is a tutorial to create a plastic buttons on a on complex shapes. It's not easy to get a GOOD one from this tutorial, it's fun tho....trust me, it's worth it :) Again, you need some smooth steps from previous tutorial.....to make it looks better.
Please read this tutorial slowly....it might be a lil' bit confusing ....so don't fall asleep .

1) Create a new layer (layer 1)and a new button....then SMOOTH it (fig 1)

Fig 1

2) Make sure your foreground color is white to give a faded LOWER highlight of your button/image.
Click a new layer (layer 2) then go to Edit > Stroke and I used 8 pixels here (fig 2)....result (fig 3)

Fig 2                                                                                         Fig 3

3) Now use lasso tool to delete some upper section of our first stroke (layer 2). (fig4)....after removing the result should like fig5

Fig 4                                                              Fig 5

4) Then blur it by go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur and I used 6 pixels (fig6). It depends on the thickness of the stroke tho. Oh yea...change the layer mode to Soft light and make the opacity around 50% ~ 60%....totally up to you :)

Fig 6

Now we gonna start to create an upper highlight.

5) Ctrl+click the basic image/button that you have (layer1). While the selection is still loaded create a new layer (layer 3)....then contract the selection by go to Select > Modify > Contract (2 pixels). Alright, now go to Edit > Stroke (5 pixels here) (fig7) ....result (fig8)

Fig 7                                                                                       Fig 8

6) With the selection still loaded, contract it *again?*by go to Select > Modify > Contract (1 pixel) then feather it by go to Select > Feather (I used 2 pixels).......(fig9).
Then BLUR it by go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur (5 pixels **it could be less or same with the LOWER BLUR in step #4**).

Fig 9

7) Alrighty, you can deselect it now (ctrl+D). Give a lil' bit more blur....just blur NOT gaussian blur....go to Filter > Blur > Blur......( 2x ). Now...final step...well almost, while your layer 3 (the UPPER HIGHLIGHT :: the last 2 steps above) active, ctrl+click layer 2 ( the LOWER HIGHLIGHT :: step #2).

Look at the layer window (fig 10) and the image (fig 11)

Fig 10                                                                      Fig 11

8) Got it ? good...now press DELETE to remove the LOWER part from Layer 3. Then deselect it...voila.

Take a deep breath....relax....u're done. Pardon me for my bad explanation...I hope it's clear enough . If you found some mistakes/error, let me know....people learn from mistakes :)
